MATTERS MUSICAL
(To tho Editor'. . Sir,—Your reporter, in commenting on tho playing of Mr* Hayes; on Wednesday evening, states that “the Society are to bo complimented on having two such finished performers as Messrs Apted and Hayes.” Ho has evidently forgotten, or else was not aware of the fact that Messrs McCarthy and Holder are also inemhcrs of the Society. The’ former is otic of tho finest soloists wo have had on tho Coast, I while the Matter's capabilities can easily be judged by his beautiful playing of tho obligato to "Braga’s Scrcnata,; sang by Mrs Aosalpra on Wednesday night. Then coming to orchestral playing, where could you have a better man than Mr McCarthy? Anyone who attended the Catholic" Bazaar at Christmas can bear me but in supporting bis capabilities as an orchestral player. Indeed, at. various times playing at different entertainments with St Patrick's Orchestra he has proved himself an orchestra on his own, he being the only first violin
You will pardon me for taking up your valuable space on this subject, but knowing tho value of tho two players above mentioned, I thought it was only fair to have their names' mentioned, for sometimes while encouraging some performers others are discouraged: Yours, etc— MUSIC.
[Wo are quite aware of the proficiency of the two gentlemen mentioned; indeed, wo have frequently mentioned their very creditable work. 'Mr Apted was specially mentioned as being the leader, and our correspondent will admit—“a right good leader too.” —Ed., E.S.]
