Mr Taverner, Agent-General for Victoria, giving evidence before the Butter Commission, advocated the stoppage of all manipulation in the marking of milk. The blending or addition of foreign fats should be made a serious offence, punishable by imprisonment the second time. Mr Taverner advocated tho prohibition of blending colonial with pure English or Irish butter. Although they were aware that the largest proportion of Victorian butter was now sold to blenders, Victorians would prefer to have their butter sold honestly for what it was, aha would like to see all butter in the retail shops marked with the country of its origin. Mr Cameron, the New Zealand Produce Commissioner, testified that his Government advocated tho prohibition of blending. He did not fear that the trade would decline if the blending was stopped.
