MARRIAGE A REAL LOTTERY.
It is often stated figuratively that marriage is « lottery, but there is at least one instance on reoord where it was intended to to make it a real lottery iu every .sense of the word. The following advertisement recently appeared in an American newspaper : A young man ef good figure and disposition, unable, though desirous to procure a wife without the preliminary trouble of amassing a fortune, proposes the following expedient to attain the object of his wishes. He offers himself as the prize of a lottery to all widows and maidens under thirty-two. The numb&r of tickets io be 600 at fifty dollars each. Only oob number to be drawn from the wheel ; the fortuuate proprietor of which is entitled to the husband and the 30,000 dollars.” We are unable to discover the result of this curious offer. Young Lady : I should like to give my intended a little surprise before our marriage. What would you recommend ? Lady Friend : Don’t wear yoar false teeth just for once. * * 9 11 Dear me ! Why don’t they teach choruses to sing intelligibly ?” she exclaimed. “Itis so aggravating to be uuable to distinguish the words.” “ You don’t know your luok. I have read the libretto,” he replied.
