3,000 DOLLARS OR A WIFE.

One of the most extraordinary wagers ou record was recently made by a wtalthy native of Cincinnati, Ohio, who bet £I,OOO against £2,000 that ho would trundle a wteel-barrew 10,000 miles in 450 days, under the following peculiar circumstances : He was to start from Cincinnati with only four cents in his possession, and he must return within the specified time with 3,000 dollars in cash, or a wife. He must neither beg, borrow, nor steal any money during his tramp, nor use any of his private fortune, but must earn the money to pay his way, while he must put up at a good hotel in every place he visited, paying for such accommodation not less than eight shillings a night. This unique wager was the outcome of a discussioo as to the chance of obtnioiug work in the United States ; the man who eventually laid the wager contending that “ money could Biways be made by anyone able and willing to work.’’ It is interesting to relate that he won bis wager by performing the feat mentioned, and bringing home a wite and a thousand doliais in cash.
