OUR ROAD BOARD, ETC.

Mr Editor,

Please " go for" those Road Board members and rouse them up a bit. All they're good for is getting into debt; anyone can do that. I can. Before they go in for any more ' experimenting' with crates in the river Kaituna and such like devilment (amateur or socalled practical man civil engineering) we would remind them of Mr Graham's requisition of some months back to come and fill up these yere holes in the " rising Town of Bainham" ; deepening that ditch by Golding's 2ft for 10 chains along the road ; and putting in 12 inch box cu'vert and filling in that swamp

in by-road at Cooper's mill, as they neglected to get the .£IOO voted and granted by Government specially for this by-road. Idiots, or worse. We should like to know who is responsible for that money wasted in Kaituua River, and how much they propose to squander again. If they cannot check a little creek that a sparrow can hop over anywhere, why not call in "your friends" who put in main struts 25ft by 2j inches and call it a " bridge." Anyhow, there is only one way of dealing with currents, and if all those wiseacres (there's enough of 'em goodness only knows) who call themselves " practical men," (save the mark) don't know it, we object to any more ratepayers' money being chucked into the the sea by the shovel full. We all know what the Government did in harbour works, through " not knowing how."

Another thing, we've got enough men, horses and carts in Bainham to do all the local work, so why wait for those others who never come. The holes in our main road are of more consequence than those bits of puddles down to HLdimott's where there is no heavy mill trailic. Who is Hickmott at all, and where the devil does he live?

Another thing, Don't you want some ornamental trees planted round your township as well as asphalted or wood paved roads ; wouldn't a few ornamental garden seats add to the general and personal refinements and adornments of the town, which is honoured by the residence of a real live " Editor" (its true the paper is only a very little one). You said a lot about yer town rates; pray, where do you get the money from to pay them with—why, from the country. And pray don't the town people use the country roads as much and more than we do. Then do you townies keep our country roads, and don't ever put that drivel into your press again, trying to hoodwink the general public; otherwise we shall really have to start "An Opposition Rag."—Yours feelingly, J.E.R.B.T.
