Power of a Pound of Coal.

A curious and interesting calculation hasbeen made by Prof. Rogers, of Washington,. D. C., on the dynamic" power of coal. According to the professor, a single pound of good steam coal has within it dynamic power equivalent to the work of one man for one day. Three tons of the same coal represents a man's labor for a period of twenty years, and one square.mile.of a seam of coal, having a depth of four feet only, represents as much work as one million (1 000.000) men can perform in twenty years. Such calculations as the above may serve to remind ushow very wasteful our methods of |burning fuels must be, in spite of all that has been, done by inventors in the way of economy.
