Dominion Conference ol the New Zealand School Committees today a Wellington motion advocating removal of education from pot.i - cal control by the appointnient of a National Council ot Education met *utu general approval ana was cair.eu unanimously. the mover, Mi Ingram, suggested that the the council should consist oi seven members, one representing tlio Government, one the teaching pro.cs.sis>n, two the local education authorities one the primary School Committees, one commercial interests and one the Trades and Labour Councils. The ‘Education Council should hold office lor five years and retirement should be by rotation, to ensure continuity of policy. He further su«rgested that under the Gouncil there should be district councils consisting of representatives of Municipal Councils, Employers and Employees’ Associations, School Committees. the teaching profession, agricultural organisations and additional members, to be elected to- represent the general public on the same basi: as councils and hospital boards. The District Councils should have control of education in their respective areas under the National Council. The conference carried a remit from South Canterbury advocating the purging of the roll and the elimination of unsatisfactory teachers.
