Sept. 28 An entirely new departure in the preservation of beauty spots in New Zealand will be made by an amendment to the Scenery Preservation .Vet. which will lie introduce!l to the House by the lion. E- A. Ransom. It is proposed to give authority for tlie setting up of private scenic reserves and to apply to them all the protection of the provisions of the principal enactment, which is applicable to existing public reserves. The proposal is designed mainly to protect areas from vandalism. Other clauses in the Bill tighten up tlu* present sections governing offences: for instance, if the new measure becomes law. it will be an offence to light fire on a public road whore there is danger of flames, spreading into a reserve. Another provision seeks to enable a civil action. in addition to a fine imposed, to be token to recover damages from persons damaging reserves, an 1 the full value of any timber unlawfully ' emoved from them. Trespass by stock will be prevented by another clause. Also in the Bid is power to authorise the taking and killing of opossums within scenic, reserves.
