POWER BOARD

GOES IN FOlt ECONOMIES CONTROL OF BUSINESS An economy and reorganisation committee, set up at a recent meeting of the Manawatu-Oroua Power Board, brought down a report to yesterday afternoon’s meeting of the hoard. The following were the chief of the nine recommendations, which were adopted : That a managing-secretary he appointed to control the board’s business. Only one engineer is necessary. and that the engineer be appointed. That a garage at Bunnythorne and the store at Palmerston he shifted to Feilding. and that, where possible, the board’s beet of lorries be stored at Feilding. That sufficient men be stationed at Bongoten to control a given area in the district with a view to saving transport costs. That the tree-r-ulling gang be dispensed with, and in the future all owners he requested to cut their own trees. ‘‘The board is stepping on dangerous ground in handing over the control of a highly tech nical business to a non-teelini-cal man, and is looking for trouble,” said Mr J. A. Nash. MIL E. O. Bond replied that the evidence indicated that the practice of having a managing--secretary had been highly satisfactory in other districts. Considerable consideration was given to the clause relating to the shifting of the store. Mr .J. Hodgens, a member of tbe committee, said the rt commendation had been carried by tbe casting vote of tho chairman. The"question of appointing a managing-secretary ,was discussed, and it was decided that the chairman (Air O. McElrov) on J Messrs C. G. C. Dermer and TV. Afolvav, should interview the present secretary. CHANGE DEFEBEED The report of a committee, set up some months ago, to consider the advisability of removing the administrative offices of the board from Palmerston to Feilding came before the board. Air C. G. C. Dermer, chairman of the committee, said that, as the hoard was changing its policy, the report should he deferred again.
