BYRD EXPEDITION
SUPPLY OFFICER’S LETTER HELP IN NEW ZEALAND Dunedin, April 7 Owing to prolonged illness, the supply officer of the Byrd Antarctic Expedition has been unable to write to the local agents sooner regarding the next expedition, but a letter wa b received this moiling by Messrs 11. L. Taplcy and Company from the office!*, reading as follows : ‘We are practically entirely dependent on donations from domestic and foreign manufacturers to enable us to carry out our plans regarding the second expedition. We have been assured of all our food supplies, including meats, all the required coal, gasoline, kerosene and oil. The Tidewater Oil Company has agreed to transprot all gasoline and oil on its tanker to Dunedin, and undoubtedly it is in a position to take advantage of storing facilities. In view of the foregoing, you will readily understand our desire to provide refrigerating facilities, as we are endeavouring to have all supplies requiring refrigeration shipped directly to New Zealand, where they can be taken, care of pending our arrival. Admiral Byrd will point out to you the great necessity of cutting the cost of this undertaking to the minimum, and in view of past experience we are quite confident that you will do y our utmost to cooperate with us- Several members of the oil expedition are looking forward to the day when they will again have the pleasure of seeing you and your pleasant country .
