CONCESSIONS OR CRASH
MOKE REASONABLE GENEVA OPTIMISM AT LAST OVER ECONOMIC’ ONFERENCK (Aust. and N.Z. Cable) London. Jan. 12. The Daily Telegraph's Geneva correspondent says as a result of the discussions of the preparatory commission of the World Economic Conference British and American experts have agreed on the general lines of a common course of action. It is hoped the French will similarly produce concrete proposals which will lead to a definite formula. The American delegates lioi>e that the Powers will reach some arrangement regarding the war debts before the Economic Conference meets. Their contribution is that if a satisfactory agreement on debts is reached America will probably entertain the idea of lower tariffs, hut at the same time she will require Britain to stabilise tin* sterling if not on a gold ttusis on a determined basis which will not admit of difficulty. Tlie correspondent adds: “The feeling of pinion is justified. This is a new Geneva—a Geneva faced with catastrophe and all the parties prepared to make concessions”
