THEFT OF TICKET
Winner of Art Union SOON RECOVERED MISPLACED GENEROSITY (Per Press Association.) . Greynumth, Oct 3. ’ Tlie winner of the first prize of £2OOO in the No. 18 art union, drawn oil September 24, Miss M. A. Stopforth, of Hokitika, to-day had her Winning ticket, No. B010!K), stolen from her residence. It appears that a young man called at her residence asking for SOs for a fare to Christchurch. He stat- <■ 1 that lie had just been discharged from hospital.' Miss Stopforth gave him £l. and also Invited him to have a meal. Hi- entered the house, hut while Miss Stopforth was preimring the meal for him the man noticed her handbag containing the winning ticket, also a sum of money. Without waiting her return to the room in* took the bug and decam (*ed. | leaving the town. Miss Stopforth informed the police, and Constable Dougherty, who had a car handy, immediately motored out |along tlie road toward Kumara. He succeeded in overtaking and arresting the man two and a half hours after the theft. He took him to the Hokitika look-up, where tlie hag an.l contents were found intact, including the art, union ticket. The man will he charged to-mor-row at Hokitika. Til quick recovery of the missing hag is considered a creditable feat on the jairt of tlie police.
