The previous elections wei> held in 1927, when the Cosgrave Party returned to power with -7< ■ Labour w:th 13, indepeiuJents 13, Farmers 6, anil National League 2 seats. As ;hc limit of by-elections the Government gained and De Valera lost one seat. Despite the strength of the Republicans and Do,. Valera’s strong y.cronal influence, Mr Cofigrave managed to carry on throughout very difficult, yrurs. 'narked at intervals I y dangerous red io 1 outbreaks. At the elections culminating to-day 92 seats are being contested by Government candidates, 100 by lie Valera’s nominees (their fighting funds coming mainly from V.S.A.). 34 by Labourites and 28 by Independents, An indication of what, may lie the ideas of the Tmlependents may lie gathered from, the fact that the Lord Mayor of Dublin, Air Alfred Byrne, is standing as an Independent—at iho' special request of Air Co-sgrave. This would indicate that in a crucial division in Parliament the Independents would vote to. keep the Government in office.
