HOSPITAL FINANCES DIFFICULTIES THIS YEAR WAIKATO HOARD S ACCOUNTS “The sooner we change’ this system of conducting our public finances the bettor for everybody,’’ declared Mr. J. J .Ryburn, chairman of die Waiato Hospital Board, when members took strong exception to a tag l of the Audit Deartmont drawing attention to the hoard's overdraft which was overdrawn to the extent of £SOOO.
Tn n later advice the Auditor-Gor-eral notifitvl tlio Board that ho did not intend to take any further action. regarding the matters to which exception was taken. Af;r. J. tV. Barton said the Dop art me lit tagged accounts and then wrote telling the Board not to take it seriously. This method of doi.ng business was enough to test a.nybody’s patience. It was most unbusinesslike, a.a.jd Mr. W. B. Bo wry, that JCoOO had h l>e found by every member. If the D c paid mont insisted it oould. force them to wipe off tlu> amount from their own pockets. The treasurer should tell members when the account was overdrawn so that they could control expenditure accordingly. Mr. By burn said that, so far as tUu present year was concerned, it wag impossible for any big board to keep within its legal limit. Il the Waikato Board did so it would have to close all branch hospitals an<_] at least one ward, of the main, hospital. The Department’s letter was received.
