Conversations on the telephone used by the operating staff of the Auckland Telegraph, office during the Takapuna Jockey Club’s meetings on Saturday and Monday last have resulted in an interrogation of over 40 members of tho telegraph stuff by two inspectors of the do,partmcint who were specially summoned from Wellington.. The line was tapped by laying a. wire under .the carpet and the special officers of tho department took a. note of all the conversations hearing on, betting or tips. ) Those who had used Iho telephone wer© confronted with the notes of those conve ran ii ons.
In some cases the employees sought legal/ advice,. It is the rule of the- department that any officer refusing to supply information to a. superior may ho suspended and betting conversations on telegra-ph or telephones by officers on duty are strictly forbidden.
