SWIMMING NOTES
(By “Splash.”)
Thu recent Carnival was loyally patronised bv local enthusiasts, and a more appreciative audience would be hard to produce.
The diving evends were a trifle wearying owing to the large nomimttions. This small item will be, climated, as' the club intends staging a fancy dive at their next effort which will bo harder to do than the plain dive and. will also bo a novelty jto the onlookers. <
Miss Meg Kynvett, as predicted, easily won the ladies’ d,’ve. A visitor in H. Gillespie had a; swim in. one or two events, but as he handed in his -time in bath water’ events he was harshly handicapped but later ho will produce better form. i \ v . .
Norma. Milverton raced well in. the girls’ handicap. This girl shows a lot of promise*; 1 / ’ Coin McKenzie was’sadly out of; form, and the saiiie applies to Don' Salter, but it is 'doubhffill even at’ their best if they could defeat AY.7 Hirini, who, if* properly coached,' would be among the .first flight. Pahi.atua, Club have a. peculiar clause on their■ programfife debarring juniors 14 ■ yea HE' Add. under from competing' 'in- ahy event other 1 than those provided fol* them. This* at least is not right; and some of our members may be'competing in events under profilest. ! ' • This applies mo'st to Betty Harford, who lias had a. special preparation for the' ICO yards ladies’ Manawatu ehilmpionship, • and as advice has been received that on her winning this event it does not debar her from competing in the N.Z. Intermediate class next year, something must be wrong /with the clause just mentioned. It may be of interest to lifer local fit ends to _ know that several seconds will meed to be cut off the existing record before she is defeated. Henry Dewe is the worst handicapped breastroke swimmer in Manawatu. it must be the family name that lie is handicapped on. W. Cochrane’s diving was a treat to .watch at the rebent carnival. With a. fair go ‘‘Cocky” is hard to beat.
Ratty Sporle has not been so keen in; her training lately. It seems a pity that our coach does not use; his influence to try and keep fib's young swimmer up to the mark, as at her age swimmers are made and cahnot forgot the methods shown. Ron Eade will be a competitor in the diving events at our next Carnival which is supposed to bo held on Wednesday March 6tli. At least the date has been applied for. M. J. Eade, our popular secretary, will be leaving Feilding shortly for Auckland, wl*ere lie will undergo a special preparation as a missionary and later will join forces with his, brother in India. His many friends and members of the club will join in wishing him all good things in his new venture. ‘‘Ruddy” has served the! club and swimming generally loyally. Ho has represented his club; in various events and was a, tower of strength to the, Feilding Agricultural College, i'll their effort to raise funds to build a, bath at tfje school, and no doubt this last achievement will be recognised- later. B. Dewo nearly frained a comeback in the Ladies ..Handicape, she also capably filled the. bill as association secretary at the recent carnival.
One or two more of our junior -lady swimmers-ah-ay be seen to the fore the Pahhvtua Carnival.
