AN INTERESTING RELIC

Particulars of an interesting relic giving substance to the theory that there ;wet'l i'artuguesej goldm filers in Australia probably £>o‘ years before the landing of Captain Cook in 1770, have been related by a- New South Wales resident. The relie—a. metal weight about the size of half -a-crown, but nearly twice as thick—was found at the foot of Mount Dromedary. near Canberra, in .an old deserted goldfijeld. It "’as 'probably used for weighing gold dust; or nuggets. On one side of the rejio is the head of ICing John V. of Portugal, and the date 1717, and on the reverse side is a crest surmounted by a royal . croWn, bearing the words : “Three Pounds Twelve,” evidently the value for that weight of gold at that paticular time. The discovery is said, to be the first of its kind made in Australia.
