In a statement made to th© police by James Hughes, the youth who was arrested after the discovery of the body of the child Smith at Poolamaeca -staioii, near Broken Hill,- he said he put Joan Smith on/ a horse, which became frightened when he pulled out his handkerchief, and' threw the girl. As she showed no- signs of life affitei a- quarter of an hour, and, fearing Jie would he blamed for putting her on the horse, lie buried her body in the rabbit-hole, which, lie deepened.
