NEW ZEALAND BUTTER
private; consignments to , ENGLAND Ur W. 11. Haddrell, Westown, New Plymouth, has received a letter from a friend, resident in 13arnsthpel (North Devo-u) eon taming sfliino very applicative remarks on the quality of the butter sent as a Christinas gift through Ithe Dairy Produce Control Boar©' and conn merits on the practices of retailers in blending inferior graders with New Zealand butter.
Whom opened ,tlio butter was found to be in excellent condition arid had apparently ben - carefully packed, tbo letter states. r J be cost of the butter and consignment charges amounted to '2s ,<ki’ or I.os for the 41b package ,the same as the price ruling for. the celebrated Devonshire butter which is brought to tlie market twice weekly by the English farmers. r i h© English butter sulfcis ■severely bo /comparison. With that from Now Zealand, and docs not approach tlie latter lor quality. It is rather signiticaht (the writer •adds) that butler supposed to be New Zealand, sold by the Colonial produce Company is priced at Is Sd alb at Barnstaple, while New. Zealand butter is retailed at 2s 0d at Bath, some miles distant. There is a marked difference iii the quality' of the two butters and that solo at' 2s Gd is far superior to that sold at Is Bd, though both are supposed; to Ire colonial dairy produce. H is evident that vendors are blending tlie higher quality with.- interior graders and selling the product as colonial butter .with a consequent detrimental effect bn the market tor New Zealand produce. Unless the New Zealand producers take proper steps to see that their butter is* put on tho market in its original /edndition they cannot hope to exercise Control over unscrupulous retailers and the only remedy appears to be tho elimination ol bulk distribution and the substitution of labelled 11b packages.
