Cabled S yduey, March 10. Considerable controversy has arisen over tho handicapping of tho New Zealand gelding Royal Tea, which won the second division of the Nursery Handicap at Roselii'll. It is generally the opinion that ltoyal 'Tea carried a stcino too little. The handicapper’s champions assert he was weighted as a horse which had not previously raced, instead of as tho winner of a race and the runner-up of anothe r in the Dominion. Support for tho allegation that the horse was not correctly registered is given by the fact that the race-book did nob show the initials of the country wherein it last raced, and is demanded by tho Australian Jockey Club rules. Some racegoers are demanding an inquiry.

NOTES AND COMMENTS. •It was pleasing to see Mr Beit .Russell score a win with Mount Marta in the Ma lam ala Cup on Saturday. This gelding, now a five year old, won the Hawke’s Bay Guineas, and showed some promise in one or two subsequent handicap events. Recently .Mount'-Marta dead lieated wtih Scat in the Rotorua Cup. Mr Russell still, has Siaosi carrying his colours, but the former has done very little to earn his keep since lie won the Great Easter at Riecarton 12 months ifgo.

At the Nelson meeting on Saturday Misgovern .was saddled up for the Flying Handicap, but.- bolted a couple of times before the race and was gllowed to he withdrawn, the investments on tho daughter of King Mark and Ferula being returned. Three races later Misgovern was again produced, and starting the outside r of a field of nine led all the way to return a fine price to her small number of supporters. Viewed in the light of -her subsequent showing, it would seem that the stewards Tvero somewhat lenient in allowing the mare to he withdrawn from her first engagement.

The Wanganui jockeys— J. Barry and D. C. AVatts —did the Marl-horough-Nelson meetings. Barry rode fou r winners and AVatts one.

The Op intake Club, which races tomorrow week, has ' received good acceptances, the class being quite fair. It was this meeting last year that gave the general run of an inkling of just,, liovy good Reremoana was, for after showing great pace in the open sprint lie went on to Trentham to win the ‘ Thoinposn Handicap and JJien on to Ellerslio to capture the Eastcf.' Handicap. AVill another Reremoana be produced at Opunake next week?

“The AVatcber” ;on the Nelson meeting: The bright sunshine, picturesque situation ol the, course, and the simple and profound enjoyment of the crowd:) make a distinct and pleasing impression on a visitor accustomed to tho..more mutter-ol-faol metropolitan meetings. -It is a true pieilie gathering in which the whole district takes a keen and unalloyed interest. Even domestic affairs arc permitted to obtrude themselves upon the day’s events. A isitors from afar were greatly kick led over tlie following on tile official notice hoard: “Will the mother of the baby in a. ear at the gate please go to it.” There in a nutshell Is the wholesome atmosphere of the annual Nelson meeting.
