TIMBER.

HIGH COST OF PRODUCTION

Mr 0. Bartholomew last night' gave some figures showing the cost of producing timber in New Zealand as compared with other countries. The wages of timber corners in Sweden, America and Canada were very low —Sweden ; 7s V7d jv day of .10 hours, Canada 25s per 50 hour week, America 40s Gd a week. In America coolie labour was principally used. In New Zealand the wages were 18s and £1 per day for similar work. The. railway freights on. timber in New Zealand had been raised 1iv.40 l>e,. cent, on the pre-war charge. The royalty was also a large item. A few years ago it was Is per 100 feet at the stump, and now the Forestry Department was charging 4s per 'IOO feet on the timber. These, facts made it difficult for the industry to compete with other eon n tries.
