GORGE ROAD.

EXCESSIVE COST OF PRODUCTION. Tho original'estimate for the construction of a. 21-foot road through the Manawatu Gorge was Udß,ooo. Up to June 30 of this year, £41,000 had been spent and still anothet £11,500 is required to see it through. A representative gathering of delegates of contributing local authoiities met in the Palmerston North Borough Council Chambers yesterday to discuss the position ..relative to the £52.589 Gorge road. The matter of discontinuing the work in progress was discussed at length, amf ultimately the following motion was carried: “That the matter of discontinuing work in the Goige be deferred until a reply had been received from the Minister of Public Works alter be had consulted his engineers, and that another conference of contributing local bodies be convened by the Board of Control to discuss this.”
