HANi\Ai\ DEFEATS FOGWELL

Wellington, Nov. 21

The New Zealand .sculling championship was rowed on the Wairau river, Blenheim, on Saturday noon, between W. Fogwell, the holder,* and P. Hannan, the challenger. There was a. three-knot current and a strong wind against the rowers. Hannan won the toss", choosing tho inside position. From a. splendid start Hannan drew away immediately, and was soon two lengths in the lead. This order obtained until the first bend was reached, when rough water was met. Both were rowing a good swinging .stroke, but iHiaiinan. still kept his advantage. Nearingthe Wairau shed, however, he struck a. snag, and momentarily lost ground. Coming to thi> halfway point the wind and current drove both the boats on to the southern side, Hannan now being four or five lengths ahead. Through getting too close in Fogwell fouled the bank and checked his progress, but recovering, ho started after Haunan, and reduced the gap to a couple oJ' lengths. Both men quickened tlieir stroke, hut Hannan responded to every challenge. Getting into smooth water, Fogwell started to move up, and rowing a quicker stroke, the Australian made a great effort, but Hannan kept his advantage, and won by one and a half lengths.
