FINGER BECOMES A THUMB KING'S INTEREST IX A SURGICAL MARVEL. London. A wo 11 dor of modern surgery was seen to-day by the King and Queen in the course of their visit of inspection to the Reading War Hospital No. 1. Private .Beesley, who was a pianist before he became a soldier, had the thumb of his right hand shot away in action. The surgeons, foreseeing that this would be a grave handicap to him again in civil life, undertook to transplant the third finger of the left hand on the place where his thumb had been. Tho operation was quite successful, and Private Beesley told tho King that he expects to be able to play again as well as ever.
The munitions of the great food campaign Avero aftenvards inspected by the King and Queen in the seed establishments of Suttou and Sons.
In the flower seed room, the Queen stopped for some minutes to examine an order -which was being packed for the Graves Registration Committee of the Expeditionary Force in France. This consisted mainly of large packets of mixed seeds of simple, homely flowers like sweet alyssum and Tom Thumb nasturtiums, which will be sown on the graves in the military cemeteries.
