Feilding Star, Oroua and Kiwitea Counties' Gazette. THURSDAY, AUGUST 17, 1916. PROBLEMS OF EMPIRE.
The visit of Mr. Lionel Curtis to Feilding provicfed a mental tonic for those Avho took the opportunity of hearing him expound his Gospol of Imperial Federation. As one Feilding man aptly put it, tho Curtis Idea mado those who heard it "think imperially." Tho trouble is that it is the Little Englander who really needs cbm-erting into an Imperialist. New Zcalanders and Australians are "born Imperialists." They are brought up to think imperially. Australia to them is Australia, Canada is Canada; but England is the Home Country, the Old Land—Home. And there is all tho affection in such thinking as "home" suggests. There is no Problems of Empire for Ncaa' Zealanders and Australians.! Their fathers fought Downing street for tho privilege of self-government in a manner that colonials of to-day do not realise because to-day avc enjoy home rule to tn% fullest extent. The trust and confidence Aye place in the Homeland are testified to in tho manner in which we havo responded to tho call of the blood. We trust the Old Country, and that is why our response is co whole-hearted. Where there is doubt, there is no trust; and if avo had no trust, Aye should not bo sending our 20th reinforcements into camp.
