The body of-Mrs. Bates, a, victim ot the Manakau gale fatality, was recovered yesterday. It i.s surmised that the accident occurred at midday, when the family was at dinner. A rata tree, seven feet in diameter, plunged 50 feet down the hillside, carrying with it the entire camp and a quantity of spoil. This slip made the recovery of the bodies difficult. Mr. Bates came from Petone. The boy, who was also killed with his parents, was five years' olTf. The scene of the accident is eight miles away, and over a very rough track.
A BOY COMMITS SUICIDE. Auckland, August 4. A boy 15 years of age, Claude Harry Waddcll, shot himself this morning at his parents' home in De-von-street, Eden-terrace. His father, a baker's driver, returnc'd home for lunch and discovered a noto in tho boy's writing in which tbe lad stated that he intended to shoot himself. On making a search, Mr. AVaddell found tbe dead body of his sou in the bouse, the boy having evidently shot himself through tho .heart with a pea rifle.
