Collins, of Wellington, have boon elected president and vico-proaident respectively of tho Dominion Bowling Association, which now has a membership of ]2,000. Mr G. F. Furby, Assistant-inspector of Post Ollicos, who joined tho IVlograph Department as a cadet at Hokitika'in February, 1870, retired on his own accord on August 1, after over 45 years iv the Government Horvicp. Lieut.-Commander U. 0. FYoyberg, D.S.O. (a Wellington boy), who was reported wounded on July 20, wa« admitted to tho Kew Zealand stationary hospital at Port Said on July '27 1 with o, severe shrapnel wound in tho abdominal ivall. Ho has been miceessI'ully oporated upou. It was on August b\ ISJOG, that Sir Joseph Ward formed his first Ministry, after tho death of Premier Soddon—nino years ago Inst Friday. On that occasion, also, Dr McNab was appointed a Minister of tho party. Theso two aro tho only members of tho Ward Ministry who are now members of tho National Ministry. No Board in Now Zealand is more fortunate than Wanganui in tho matter <if its 'presiding officer, and, what is more, we doubt if any chairman can be. named who has sxieh -a grip of detail or does more effective work to promote the cause of education in Jus district than Mr Piraui. Miss Cruiekshank, Principal of the Wanganui Girls' College, was a visitor to Foilding on Saturday. After an absence of nearly lour months, tho Melanesian ixiesion steamer Sou thorn Cross has just returned to Auckland from the Solomon Islands, Now Hebrides, and Norfolk. Her passengers included Dr C. .!. Wood, Bishop of Molanesia, who will spend four weeks in Auckland; Archdeacon W. A. Uthwafct, who has suffered severely from intermittent lever, and will .visit England on furlough ; and tho Rev. H. L. Hart, who is also going to England cm six months' furlough, after five and a half years' continuous service in the mission. Dr Wood left Auckland 12 months ago, aud lias been at work in lii.-j diocese ever since.
