IS GERMANY AT WORK ? Rome, August 7. Certain monarchs have replied to the Pope's letter,' and there is good authority for stating that the Pope is about to make definite steps towards peace, and is inviting the co-operation of neutral's. A high ecclesiastic, in an interview, stated that intervention was nob premature, that everywhere the war was languishing, that the German advance in Poland ivas not conclusive, and tha* all the belligerents woro wearied —especially the apparent victors. The Pope thus choso well the moment for the first peace following up with words more energetic and efficacious. London, August 8. Ihe Corriere d'ltalia, of Rome, has pubhslied a Note stating that the Pope is working from a place which 6hould command respect by right from the natioHS. His voice ought to resound in solemn admonition to those desiring to impose peace and disregarding the rights of oppressed peoples.
