LONDON MEAT MARKETS.
Tho Colonial Consignment and Distributing Co. send us their market report, dated London, April 23, as follows:—
The trade in frozen meat has reverted to a rather lifeless condition, and although a fair quantity of meat goes into consumption considering the high level of prices, tho demand is distinctly slow and prices for some descriptions have an easier tendency. Tho opinion is held in somo quarters that tho demand is affected by tho greater care for economy now studied in many households, and although tho supplies pitched on the market this week have been, decidedly light they have proeed quite adequate for the business that could ho done.
New Zealand Mutton.—Tho arrivals during tho fortnight amount to 1.58,----014 carcases, but very little of this meat can be regarded as available yet for market use. Canterbury brands are How obtainable in limited quantities and are quoted at Gd to per lb. North Islands predominate as usual, and for good light weights high prices have been paid, 'but medium weights can be bought at sgd per lb. Ewes aro neglected in spite of tho attraction of price. Australian Mutton.—Receipts during the two weeks amount to 92 388 carcases. These sheep continue to fill the requirements of many buyers, owing to price. Good quality' wethers are rather scarce .and aro worth 5-Jd per lb. but the bulk only make 5-ld to si>d per lb. Ewes are selling at about s_d per lb. Frozen Lambs.—Arrivals consist of 201,4G4 carcases from New Zealand, 99.106 carcases from Australia, and 10.09G carcases from South America. The outloblvj's still very satisfactory, but prices no longer have an upward tendency. The quality of Cantcrburvs boars signs of the character of the season, and tho quotation of 8d to B|-d is voi<y full value; for tho meat. North Islands of. are sold at iJd ho 8d aro also mostly of poor qpiijify, but sell freely in the Provinces atfbetter than 7d per lb Hoggets are in request at about "id.per lb.
oo k'™ en B eef.—Arrivalß amount to *-™ quarters from New Zealand, 14,946 quarters from Australia, 592 quarters from South America, and 0400 quarters from North America. Ihe sale lias been very slow and practically ,rostricted to contractors to the Government. Only secondary quality finds its way on the market, and this makes prices very close to the nominal value of prime beef.
