SPORTING.

SOME TURF NOTES

(By "Pointer," for the Stab.) On Wanganui form George should be well fancied.

It looks like pounds to peauute on Emperador winning a. race at Auckland!

Royal Arms won tho National Hurdles, and is at present--in great nick.

Styrax won at Wangamti, and reports from Hawera state that he can get over the "country."

Allen Doone and Alt-car are freely spoken of as a good proposition for Otaki on Thursday next.

The big jumping season has commenced, and the Great Northern will be run at Auckland on Thursday and Saturday.

Charmilla, holder of.the six-furlong record for Australasia, has retired to tho stud. She ran six furlongs in 1.11 4-5 at Riccarton.

El Gallo is greatly fancied in Auckland, but judging by the manner in which Corrie-won t&cMay Hurdles at "Wanganui, El won't have it. all his own way.

* A Wellington writer says that Chortle has only started once, in a hurdle race, and was beaten. Ho certainly started but once over the battens," twelve months ago—but he won easily.

C: Jenkins has held tho record for many years past for tlio largest number of winning mounts in any one seabou, but Deeley has now got to the top. Charlie has ridden only two winners this season.

Two records have been put up this season by a three year old and a two year old. Reputation has beaten all totals in the amount of prize money won by a three year old; ,and Desert Gold lias done likewise in Iho two-year division.

The Advance horse Client has feveral races since he scored at Feilding at Easter. His.sire was a great' performer in his day, and the C. Jen-kins-Advance combination was responsible for tlio winning of much riches. Advance is owned by Mr D. Eraser-, and is still doing duty in the Rangitikei.

Sir George Clifford lias won £(iG,4b'G in stakes during the seasons. Talk about tho '"heads" of the racing bodies giving their work for nothing (vide Mr C. P. Skerrett in the Wellington Post recently)! Why, if the big owners were not the loading othcials of tho race clubs, who would sco to it that the rich stakes of recent years were not continually increased, let alone reduced ?

The prmoud stables generally have something pretty hot for Auckland, and the rod in pickle this year ie Alorecambe. Last year it was IVary, who took out the Steeples. The previous year it was Xappcr, who trieel and nearly did win the double. Ho won the G.N. Hurdles, but broke his neck in the Steepl.os. It is to be hoped Morecambo doesn't do likewise, though he might go ono better.

AshhursWohangina Racing Club has at last got its totalisator permit back. This was once a progressive little club, with a fine course at Ashhurst. It held its annual one-day fixture every December 28, the day after the Palmerstou races. .But when the latter club increased its Christmas meeting from two days to three, it deprived the Ashhurst Club of its date, which forced the latter to delay its fixture soveral days'. From tint I time the country club's meeting was never so popular as of yore, and when the city-represented Racing Commission set up by Sir Joseph Ward to reduce the totalisator permits, sent in its report, Ashhurst was one. of the first ciubs to go.

Writing of Ashhurst Club' brings back many memories long forgotten by some folks. Its genial secretary in those days, Mr J. H. Vincent, was once lucky enough 1o draw a decent prize from Tasmania. His predecessor was Mr J. S. Kreenian, who was afterwards secretary of the Dannevirko Club. Ashbursl Club, I believe, was one of the iirst (if not the lirst) of the country clubs to run a classic event at its meeting. CongraUilalions to the old club, and with Secretary Trass managing affairs, the Ash hurst Racing Club will soon recover lost ground.
