WHAT THEY ACCOMPLISHED
Paris, May 31. Official.- On the right bank of ire Yser we carried-the whole of the German trenches on Hill 17 in the Pilken
region, capturing 50 prisoners and three quick-firers. A violent artillery duel continues on the sector north of Arras. We attacked the great German work known as the Labyrinth, south-east of Neville St. Vaast. The action was hot. We progressed 400. metres and made many prisoners. We also carried more trenches at lJois Jo Pretre. Wo repulsed an attack on tho Schncpfoureith range (in Alsace), and captured an enemy trench.
THE CAPTURE OF A.BLAIN. London, May 31. ( With the capture of Abiain tho Germans have lost what is considered the most strongly defended position after Notre Dame do Lorette. Abiain bad 2000 defenders, with a hundred machine guns, of which many were destroyed by high explosive shells. Tho Germans had connected tho houses by underground ways, in which they sheltered during the French bombardments, emerging with their maxims tomeet French bayonet charges. The French therefore had to blow up ail the houses one by' one. and not Icavo ;v wsiU standing, in order to jireveufc an ambuscade.
The Germans have converted numerous factories and colliery works westward of Lens into veritable blockhouses.
