WELLINGTON QUEEN CARNIVAL.

To-morrow afternoon Professor Cardston and two ladies from Wellington will give addresses in tho Drill Hall explaining the working of the Provincial Queen Carnival. It has to bo understood that the Carnival is an effort on the part of the whole province, and not the city alone. Tho general public are invited to to-mor-row's meeting.

■ Some of the largest milk suppliers to tho Rongotea Dairy Company intend giving up milking after this season, and- devoting their time to sheep and cattle raising. Two of the suppliers milked nearly 300 cows between them, and their decision' to give up milking will make a material difference in the milk supply.

In addition .to the offers to provide accommodation for invalid and convalescent soldiers already announced, the Minister of Public Health'lias received an offer from .Mrs "Walter G. Johnston of her house "Highdon" (near Feilding), also from Mr A. C. Caugey (Auckland) his residence of 21 rooms as a convalescent hospital, Mr aiuOfrs F. Logan (Napier) their dwelling for twelve months, with a donatio v of £200 during that period • towards the espouse of maintaining nurse and staff, and Mrs Morrison (matron of Woodsidc Private Hospital, Auckland) three beds in her pnivate hospital.'

Jimmy Seerey doesn't see why all the socks should go to our troops. In tho early hours of tho other morning the housekeeper at tho Catholic Presbytery in Boulcott street (Wellingtoii) noticed a man help himself to a pair of socks which were hanging on the clothes-line outside. The thief made off, and a moment later she heard a scuffle, which was duo to the man, whose name was James Seerey, falling into the arms of Constable ODea, who was waiting expectantly outside the gate for him. His explanation as to how he came by tho socks was not accepted by the constable, and ho was arrested. To the Magistrate, Seerey explained that the socks were his, and said ho carried them about in his pocket, because if he left them aboard ship he was afraid his mates might take a liking to them. Tho housekeeper, however, recognised the socks as her own! Jimmy was given 6even days "tiinc" to think over the socks that make no fun.
