THE RUSSIAN CAALPAIGN
London, December 19. The Times Petrograd correspondent says General Hindenberg's rea lobjectire was not Warsaw but the prevention of the invasion of Silesia. Hence bis feverish activity and inability to adhere to consecutive line operations. Tho Russian plans were well served tcbre. The enemy advanced and was destroyed instead of waiting in the trenches. The enemy's offensive in Western Galicia has been checked. \Ve aro successfully executing offensive operations on the Sanok-Lisko front, and captured 3000 prisoners and several machine guns. Paris, December 19. Advices from- Petrograd state the suddon lull on tho Vistula arises from tho awkward position of the Gorman left wing due to tho Russian success in the Mlava region. It is now certain that the German plan to seize the right bank of the Vistula by making a dash on tho left and simultaneously advancing from Mlava completely failed.
Oflienij.— Our artillery prevented the enemy's attempt to cross to tho right bank- of the Vistula near Dobr■ZJm. Wo forced the Germans to evacuate an island occupied in midstream and captured their' pontoons. Fighting at Bzura is beginning to develop. Several German attacks were repulsed. We captured 1000 prisoners on tiie left bank of tho Dunaiete, iv Western GeSicia. A strong force from the Przemysl garrison is trying to get ©ut in the direction of Bmreza.
