LAST NIGHT'S NEWS.

GERMS FIGHTING STUBBORNLY.

Allies Gradually Forcing Germans Back

New Zealanders on the Defensive in

Samoa.

Australians Fighting in New Guinea.

Last night's cable news shows that, despite the stubborn German defence and attempts to take the aggressive, the Allies are too efficient for the Germs, and are more than holding their own, besides inflicting terrible losses. The Turcos and Senegalis are doing great work, while the efficiency of the British artillery and the dash of the French makes an irresistible combination. The use of dumdum bullets and saw-bay-onets, forbidden by the rules of modern warfare, is rife among the Germans. A German automobile, loaded with bombs, was captured near Rouen, and- M. Vedrines, a French aviator, destroyed a Taube aeroplane which was hovering over the French lines. The British .light cruiser Pegasus, 2135 tons, armed with B.4in guns, on the Cape of Good Hope station, was badly damaged, 25 killed, and 80 wounded, by the Konisburg, while cleaning her boilers at Zanzibar. General Rennenkampf continues his victorious march. The Japanese captured a German fortified position near Thimo. The New Zealanders at Samoa had a brush with the German Pacific fleet a week ago, and the Australians had some sharp fighting with the natives, headed by German officers at New Guinea.
