ABOUT WHITE ISLAND.

Wiiliam Williams, a man who was recently employed at White Island, informed an Auckland Star representative that six .months ago a party | was fitted out at Gisborne by Messrs ( Williams and Kettle to mine sulphur at White Island-. It was iv charge of William Murphy, aud included another Irishman named James O'Brien, both of whom Williams believes wert, on the island when the eruption occurred. Murphy and O'Brieif had previously been working at Tol ago Bay. Williams explains that the camp on the island was near tho wharf, and consisted of a tiny shanty Mid a number of tents. _It was about a quarter of a mile below the spot where the sulphur was obtained. Tho sulphur was lifted in skips from a mine 200 ft deep. The island is very hilly, and always more or less in active eruption —so much so intense heat was felt under foot and tlie sulphur fumes (except in a small area) were unbearable. The sulphur obtained was used extensively for agricultural purposes, and had established quite a new industry.
