The mission steamer Southern ' Cross, which returned to Auckland • on July 14 will leave for Norfolk Island next Friday, her stay having been considerably prolonged by causes j arising from the war. The Bishop of j Melanesia will leave in the steamer, i He preached in Auckland on Sunday, that day being a special anniversary | in tho mission, for it was on Septem- j ber 20, 1871, that Bishop Patteson was murdered. He was an English missionary in the Pacific, born in London in 1827, and made Bishop ot Melanesia in 1861. In September, 1871, he and the Rev. J. Atkin were murdered at the Isle of Santa Cruz, one of the Queen Charlotte Group, by natives. It is supposed the murder was an act of revenge for the kidnapping of natives to be used as slaves |in Queensland and Fiji, a practice that the Bishop had in fact strongly opposed.
