PROFOUND DESPAIR IN GERMANY
■ The Russians have reached Belgium, after all; for a cable message received to-day, subsequently confirmed, states that Russian reinforcements helped the Belgians to break the invader at Cortenberg. Interesting query: Did the Russians arrive via the White Sea and Scotland? Those troops of the French forces in Algeria, the Turcos, have again been making a name for themselves at the awful battle of the Marne. Torrential rain has come to further hinder the retreat of the Germans, against whom even nature wars. No wonder, for to-day brings further evidence of the doings of the Red Indians of Europe. An incident in Belgium indicates that two German army corps have to thank the Belgians that they were not amongst the missing in France. Despite every precaution to " cook " the news, word has reached Germany of the debacle, and there is now " profound despair in Germany." There may be some significance in an item that Italy has sent troops across the Adriatic into Albania, over which country she has some claim. There are persistent rumours that the greater portion of the Austrian army has surrendered to the Russians, who are fighting hard against a bigger German force in East Prussia.
