Sir Joshua Williams said it was perfectly well recognised that strategy had to be 1 used in order to catch .people at tins business. It was perfectly legitimate that strategy should be used, because 'offenders could not be caught without it, lrir could not be expected that persons who acted as informers must ■necessarily be very desirable individuals. In the present case the person to whom liquor was alleged to have been sold had been actuated in the matter .not '•>.}' greed of money, but because he had spite against, the accused. That was an element which must be taken into consideration in deciding how .far -his evidence was creditable. RETURNED" AS MAD. Wellington May 15. AVhen about a week out from .London on the voyage'which ended at Wellington to-day two steerage passengers on t-lie- Arawa—a married woman and a- young man—developed acute mania, and had to be. placed under restraint. The man was very violent and had to be constantly, watelud lest 'he should do himself ah injury. On arrival of the vessed here, the Port f-'lealth Officer refused to allow the two unfortunate people to belanded, and ordtred them to< be sent back to England.- They will be placed on boad the Gorinthic, winch leaves for London to-morrow.
