A resolution of the Secondary Schools Conference," re boarding of pupils,- was approved.
Tho Dunolly Committee approved of -the appointment of Air R. E. Armstrong as headmaster.
Increases were made to the salaries of the office staff, ranging from £30 to £10 per annum and totalling £145.
It was decided to grant a certificate of exemption to Percy Mitchell, of Kiwitea.
Mr Walter Rutherfurd was re-elect-ed ono of the Board's representatives on the Palmerston North High ochool Board.
Mr P. G. Holland, Campbell-street, was granted an extra week's salary owing to tho holidays being deferred at his school.
Mr AY. A. Armour, M.A., B.Sc, thanked the Board for liis appointment as Principal of the AVanganui Girls' College.
Tho Education Department approved of tho conveyance of pupils from Manaia to the xiawera District High School.
Votes of thanks wero accorded to the Feilding A. and P. Association folio agricultural scholarship, and to Mr E. Short for model gate.
Application is to be made to the Railway Department for the use of railway reserve tor school gardens at Feilding Technical School.
Messrs Guthrie and Cur no (chairman- of Utuwai School Committee'wero authorised to spend the -£100 grant for additions to the school (.luring the holidays.
The sawmillers at Umunmri refused to accede to the Government's condition that they should contribute £100 worth of timber for tho erection of a school.
Tho Commissioner of Crown Lands approved of the proposal to a school site, at Raetihi, provided tho present school site is transferred to the Crown.
Resignations accepted: Miss A. E. Clemance, p.t., AYaverley; Miss M. G. Loamish, probationer, Patea; Miss G. Hogan, assistant, AVaitotara; Miss E. King, p.t., Kaponga.
A teacher who had punished a child for not bringing money for school books and had written an impertinent letter to a parent was recommended to send an apology to the latter.
Miss Mary Raton, of Dunedin, L.A.8., A.T.C., London, capable of teaching piano, violin, and kinging, 26 years of age, was appointed assistant music teacher at the AVanganui Girls' College.
The Chairman was authorised to take tho necessary steps in case of an appeal .by the Teachers' Institute against the dismissal of Mr T. Stagpoole, headmaster of the Linton school.
AVorks (authorised: Pohangina, repairs, etc.; Ashhurst, repairs to residence ; AVangachu, repairs; Bunnythorpe, new desks; Castlecliff and Taikorea, enlargements to be applied for.
Senior free places were awarded in tho following District High Schools: Hawera 5, Marton 2, Feilding 4, Patea 2. The Feilding holders are: Ivy Bishop, Doris AYatson, Barbara Hare, and Arnold Downer.
A vote of thanks was accorded to tho ladies who had acted as examiners of sowing and cookery, the Chief Inspector iremarking that they had "rendered splendid service to tho district."
It was decided to offer the appointment of instructor in drawing and art in the schools throughout the district and the Feilding Technical .School, and to endeavour to procure the services of an expert in agriculture from Australia to take charge of technical education in the southern district.
The following significant sentence occurred in a letter from a lady teacher who had been transferred to a district where marriages and engagements amongst teachers wore not uncommon: "Assuring you that all tho advantages offered in the transfer I will gladly embrace, I am, yours faithfully."
Tho following proposed transfers wero agreed to: Kakaramca, Mr Roach (Rata); Rata, Mr J. Browning (Makowhai); Cameron's lino, Mr S. J. Poole (Taihape); Kakariki, Miss McDonnell (Silverhope); Makowhai, Mr Lyno (Marton); Pohonui, Mr Edwards (Mangaweka); Mangaweka, Mr Gilligan (Pohonui).
The Truant Inspector wroto suggesting that the Board consult other Education Boards as to the advisability of promoting legislation prohibiting children between seven and fourtoon years of ago from attending racing and coursiug meetings, on the ground that it would prevent boys under 14 from being apprenticed as jockeys and be in tho interests of the rising generation.—Tho matter was held over.
In acknwledging a letter of thanks from tho Board, Mr Dunlop, manager at Mr 33. Short's Almadale farm, wrote: "I have to thank the Board for your courteous letter to Mrs Dunlop and myself in connection with tho camp held hero in October by the Board. It gavo me considcraable pleasuro to assist you in any way, especially with such a fine, wellbehaved lot of boys, who aro indeed fortunate to bo under such a progrcssixe Board."
The Truant Officer brought up the question of tho attendanco of two pupils at the nearest school in the Karioi district, pointing out that the teacher of the Tangiwai school had refused to receive them, as"the native school was nearer to their residence. The Chairman said that the teacher's interpretation of the law was absolutely wrofng, and that a parent had the right to send his children to whatever school he pleased. It was decided to instruct the Tangiwai teacher acordingly.
It was decided to award tho following pupils agricultural and domestic science scholarships of £5 each (in addition to free tuition) on condition that they attend school fpr twolvo months: Hubert Burton, Hawora; Stanley Martin., AVanganui | Rangi Hiroti, Marton; Gerald Levien, Feilding; Edwin Abraham, Wanganui; Leah Gould and Hay Bramwcll, Feilding; Ethel Kenned-*-Patea; _ .Doris Henderson, .linwcra; Ivy Smith, Taihapp. Mho Board contributes £2o and tho balance is made up from: Taranaki Farmers' Union, £5; AVanganui and Feilding A. and P. Associations, £5 each; Wellington Provincial Farmers' Union, £10.
