Notes and Comments.

It seems odd that whilst carping critics arc having a fling at 'the development of .rural education in Feiiding, the Otago Education Board is following the policy of the Wanganui Board. A Press Association telegram from Dunedin states that the institution of rural science courses in the District High Schools there has made such a favourable impression upon the country people that Otago Central has guaranteed a sum of £150 towards the salary of a third instructor to take clases in that district.. This contribution guarantees a salary of £300 a year, as it receives a £'1 for £1 subsidy from the Government. Tho Otago Education Board on Tuesday last appointed Mr C. S. Ridley, of New South Wales, to the third post. He is 25 years of age, was pupil teacher at the Sydney Training College, and I since 190S had been Government Experimentalist at Yanco (N.S.W.) Experimental Farm. What now, ye Feiiding critics.

To-day the Railway Department -begins its recognition of the extra traffic in passengers thut is growing right along 'this side of the island. Extra train services begin to-day from Wellington and Auckland and will continue to run over the Main Trunk line until the holiday season is over. The extra trains at each end will leave the cities within an hour after tho regular expresses leave. It is expected that there will be record travelling over our railways from now until the end of January, because of the preparations for "a good time" that have been going on these months past —and tlrcre will be no small exodus to Christchurch for tho Davis Cup nis tournament. It is to be hoped that good weather will wait upon the- holiday-makers.
