THE ELECTIONS.
COMPLETED BY THE SECOND BALLOTS. A WIN FOR THE~OPPOSITION BY 43 TO 34. SOME MORITsURPRISES. SIR JOHN FINDLAY AND MR FOWLDS GO OUT. Yesterday saw iihe second and final round of the election .battle for tho government of New Zealand and the Government which went to the first ballot with the great majority or eighteen, emerges with a minority of nine against them, or, givkig them .the three Maoris yet to be elected, a minority of six. We predicted a few days ago that the result would be: Government, 36; Opposition, 44—or only one vote wrongly placed—as near an estimate as could be expected from a country paper. The main features of the- second ballot were the defeats of the Hon. Sir John Findlay, Attor-ney-Gettieral, and the Hon. G. Fowlds, ex-Minister for Education, by comparatively unknoAvn men. While tho Opposition is not in the position of I commanding a majority pledged to Mr Massey, it is tho largest party in the House and on most questions would undoubtedly hold its own. Tihere are two seats yet i<ll doubt—Otaki and 1 Wellington East—but there seems I little probability of the result below being disturbed. We give the complete returns of both the first and second as follows:— SECOND BALLOT. Ashburton. *W." Nosworthy (0) . 2777 J. Kennedy (M) 1468 W. S. Maslin (I) liM3 J.
