A meeting in the Broken Hill Town Hall, which was called by the Socialist group to protest against the fostering of the military spirit, led to a strong counter demonstration, ending in a free fight and the interference of the police. The voices of the Socialist speakers were drowned by the singing of patriotic songs, and the furniture and fittings of the hall suffered considerable damage during the rough and tumble fight which, followed. TVihen order was restored, a coun-ter-demonstration earned «T resolution favouring the defence movement for the citizen soldier.
