THE COST OF THE STRIKES

The Northumberland Miners 'Association asked the owners to receive a deputation to consider the eighthours' agreement. The owners declined, but were willing to discuss any other question. The North-West Engineering Employers' Association rejected the Clyde engineers' request for a week of 53 hours, similar to that worked on the iSorth-east coaet. Newcastle, March 14. Work was resumed at the mines this morning. Hitches occurred at some collieries over the working conditions. In one or two cases these were, adjusted. The men will commence work" to-mor-TOW. Thee appears to be nothing in the troubles to prevent a general resumption in a day or two. (Received March 15, 8.40 a.m.) Sydney, March 15. Five Newcastle mines are still idle pending, the settlement of minor troubles. The Seamen's Union, during the coal and coastal strikes, paid £11,500 to members out of work, in addition to £66 paid to other unions.
