Notes and Comments.
Just a week ago, on the eve of the opening of our ■ Bisley meeting at Trentham, lie briefly reviewed the qualities of our leading marksmen j and ventured upon a few tips. To day the meeting is to conclude with the great contest of the final fifty m the King's Prize match, the winner of which will ihe the champion'for 1910-11. The Star's forecast showed good shooting with the .pen on our part. We pointed out a group of men from whom special marksmanship should be expected. Amongst
them were Captain King, of Linwood, whom we classed as a brilliant shot, i On to-day's list he heads the final ' fifty. H., Marshall was named as the I Karori Club's crack, but George Hal- j liday came out and is third on today s list; but Marshall shot into 16tli place. The.-doings of Sergt. Cutler, the 'brilliant Sydneysider, we anticipated would be closely watched. He is seventh on the coveted list. We expected Private L. Belk to do something for the credit of Feilding— "the promising hope of this district," was our note last Friday—and he is not only 21st on the list of the fifty, But he was also selected as one of the national team of Volunteers in the "United Service Match, Volunteers v. Kiflemen. Other marksmen mentioned in our forecast were Masefiekl, of Picton (who is 10th in the fifty), Sergeant Wills, of the Southland M.R, (who is 25th), Sergt. James, of Napier (29th), Sergt. Maingay, of Piako (46th). As the King's Prize is fired at the most difficult range (1000 yds) it is anybody's Belt so far as the 'first twenty-five men in the final fifty are concerned. But King, who has carried off tlw coveted Belt before, and is an experienced shot, up to all the tricks of the Trentham trade, he should be able to hold his own even against his dangerous Australian compeer, Cutler.
