Notes and Comments.
The Grecr-chosen team to represent Mana.watu against the Australian cricketers in. published to-day. Feilding has four players in it —McLean (Captain), Ongley, Trevena, and Cab be. —but it should have another, Mason, wliu is certainly worth his place both as a batsman and change bowler, before young Greer, who has done nothing since the Wanganui match. Exceptions might also bo taKen to the inclusion of O'Connor, but he is as likely to knock the cover off the ball as he is to miss it, and there is great need for courageous batsmen against the Australian trick bowlers we would rather see O'Connor in than out of the team. Feilding has provided the best cricket jn. tho Manawatu contest this season, and therefore it should have had another man in the team that man should have been Mason.
It is pleasant to note, by an intimation published in our advertisement columns to-day, that Mr S. J. Carman, of "Mara Taumailii," Waituna West, is a candidate i'or public honours once more. It was with deep and genuine regret that members of the Kiwitea County Council and ratepayers only a short time ago parted with his services, for as Chairman of the Council he had reorganised its •affairs and placed matters on a Imsi-ness-like footing. It. was for health reasons that Mr Carman had to pull out from the stress and strain of public life, aiwi it seemed to him then that ho had bade farewell to a service that he had enjoyed. But it is real good to find that he has renewed liie strength, and is once more in the lireech. At the request of ratepayers in different parts of the county, Mr Carman has consented to accept nomination for one of the two Kiwitea County's seats on the Hospital and Charitable-aid Board that is to bo set up for tlie Manawatu district under the .new Hospital and Cliaritable-aid Act. Mr Carman should make an admirable member of tlie Board, for ue is familiar with the district, besides bcinjj ii:ell informed and experienced in local government. It is good to find lie is ready to go into harness again I'or illr> good of the coimminity. The election, for wliidi tliere are three candidates, takes place on tlie lOth inst.
