Kitchener's Report.
It had almost been forgotten that ( Lord Kitchener was on our premises or that he had furnished a report to the Government, so quickly are men and things overlooked Aviien they cease to be mentioned in the daily news items. But the pith of the report is before o\ir readers today, in the form of an official letter from the Field Marshal to the Premier and a le-view interview from Sir Joseph" Ward. We have neither time nor space to go into the matter at length to-day, but our readers will lie able to gather for themselves a very fair idea of what the Kitchener idea will mean to the Dominion should Parliament endorse it. The financial aspect is as important as any, and concerning this wo have to confess a pleasurable surprise. For a soldier, Lord Kitchener has been exceedingly modest —the expense of bis .scheme is not staggering, unless it be for its modesty. And the Premier assures us that the cost will bo well within our means. Wliich is
a very gratifying feature of a rejJort that was expected to land us further in. the grip of the London moneylender for whose sake wo have to protect our land against any other capitalists coming in and grabbing it. As was anticipated, Lord Kitchener has referred New Zealand to the iirst portion of his Australian scheme, with the remark that it is to be applied to New Zealand. A man of brevity, this K. of K. He does nut repeat— he does not type out Part I. of the Australian, Scheme and call it a New Zealand Scheme. Apropos the Australian Idea, it is odd to note in the Premier's interview that- he expresses agreement witli the Field Marshal's dictum that the Australia and New Zealand land forces should work togother or along the same lines. An I yet Sir Joseph would not let us work together with Australia in naval matters! New Zealand is connected with the China naval station —Australia ihas its own navy. However, the-v; may be more to be said on another occasion about the Kitchener repo.'t for New Zealand.
