A SAD AFFAIR

A sad bathing fatality occurred at St. John's Lake, East Tamaki, yesterday afternoon, the victim being Mr Edward Claude Budd, 8.A., a son of the Rev. E. C. Budd, prison chaplain. He was studying at St. John's College with the intention of entering tho ministry.
Mr Budd, together with Messrs Bamford, Wills, Gavin and H. McQuarrio,- all of whom are students at Uit College, went in for a swim.
JLessrs Bamford, Wills and "Gavin decided to cross the lake, leaving Messrs Budd and McQuarrio behind. Mr Budd, being a poor swimmer, kept well in shore, while Mr McQuh- ,- rio, who was unable to swim, remained on the bank.
The other three had just crossed the lake, when Mr Budd got into difc;iH. es : Mr McQuarrie at once rushed into the water, but was unable to :ci;dei any help, as Mr Budd was on I mi a depth of ten feet of water. .M> -UcQuarrie at once returned to short and called out to the students on i he otheT side of the lake to come to thi ciifetiessed man's assistance.
They immediately responded, but v, ere unable to reach Mr Budd -k time. Ho sank. Mr Gavin dived for the body and brought it ashore.
Artificial respiration and other liferestoring methods were tried for several hours, but without avail.
