Wellington, May 9. The following is the High Commissioner's cable dated London, May 8:— There has been no alteration in the mutton market since last week. The market -is demoralised and the supply exceeds the demand. The lamb market is steadier with a better demand on account of the low prices. ' , Mutton is quoted: Canterbury. 3d; North Island, 2|d. The output is steadily increasing. Stock 'is heavy.' • Current (quotations are: Canterr bury lamb, 4|dj other than Canterbury, 4|d; Australian, 3£d. \ At a meeting of importers for the consideration ,of the .. unsatisfactory state of the meat market, it was decided, that 'nothing can be done, the position being caused entirely by excessive supplies. • There is a better demand for beef. Hindquarters are quoted at 3id. and lorequartofs at 2Jd. Tho butter market is steady and prices -are well maintained. Choicest New Zealand is selling at 101s ; Danish, 109s ; Siberian, 975; 'Australian, 98s; Argentine, 995. , The ' cheese market :is firm, but, there aro small supplies ■ on hand. ■White makes, b^s; coloured, 635. Tho hemp market 1 is quiet, with small business doing. The following are current quotations: — Good, fair grade, on sjpot, £23; fair grade, on spot, £21 15s; fair, (current Manila, on spot, £21 10s j May to July shipments are quoted as follow : Good- fair gra.de, £22 15s; fair grade, £21 15s; fair, current Manila,' £20 10s. Last week's Manila <outpuit amounted to ~-,000 bales. Stacks held . in London are 204 tons. The cocksfoot setid market is quiet and uncertain.. Buyers are not keen to do business in cocksfoot seed at the present price of 75s for bright, clean 171 b seed. The wheat market is very uncer-' tain. Speculation affects the market very seriously, and prospects are .uncertain. The market is firm at present. ' N.Z. long-berried wheat, on spot, ex granary, per quarter of 496 lbs, 45s 6d; N.Z. short-berried wheat ditto, 44s 6d. ■ The oat market remains firm. N.Z. short sparrowbill oats, ex granary, on spot, per quarter of 3841b5, 265; N.Z. Danish oats ditto, 3201b5, 20s. The bean market remains firm, owing to reduced supplies. N. Z. beans f.a.q, (old crop), per 3041b5. 35s- 6d. The! peas market is firm, with more enquiry. Supplies do not meet requirements, Holders are firm. N.Z. partridge peas, per 5041 b, ;47s 6d.
