THE CHAMPIONSHIP MEETING. MISS POWDRELL BEATS MISS NUNNELEY. [PEB PEESS ASSOCIATION.] Nelson, December 29. Miss Powdreffl (Taranaki) beat Miss Nunneley (AVellington) in tbe final of the Ladies' Singles by B—6, 6—3. It was a splendid match. Exceptional interest was taken in this contest. Miss Nunneley, who is an English lady, and is on the staff of the Municipal Library Wellington, has held the championship of New Zealand for many years. Miss Powdr-ell, who resides at Hawera, has been a regular attendant at Championship meetings for five or six years, and gradually forced her way up to the top. Men's Singles. — Wilding beat Par. ker 6—2, 6— 1 A 6-4. Men's Doubles (final). — Parker and Doust beat Wilding and Wilding 6—2, 6—2, 7—6. Combined Doubles. — Mies Wellwood and Brown beat Miss Travers and Doust 6—2, B—6. Semi-final. — Miss Powdrell and Parker beat Miss Wellwood and Brown 2—6, 6—3, 6—3, 6—4. Of Monday's contests the Post special says: There was not. a vacant seat to be found when Misses Travers and Nunneley (both of Wellington) met. Miss Travers started in fine style, driving beautifully, and returning Miss Nunneley 's noted forehand drives with astonishing regularity. She took the lead, 3—l, and after two more keenly contested games, she led 4—2, and was within a stroke of the seventh game when Miss Nunneley came with the greatest determination and evened up at 5 all. After that it was all but over. The first set went 77—6 to Miss Nunneley. In the seoond set the loser played pluckily, but neyer at any time had her opponent in difficulties.
