" » . CHAMPIONSHIPS AT NELSON. WILDING BEATS FISHER. [PEE PBBSS ASSOCIATION.] Nelson, December 27. Good progress was made yesterday afternoon at the tennis tournament. Playing in the second round of the Men's Singles, Wilding met Peacock. The latter made a poorer showing than was expected, playing with rashness. Wilding then met Harraway, taking the game very easily. Miss Nunnelly and Wilding gave a very fine display in the Combined Doubles, Wilding's net work being particularly deadly. H. A. Parker made a three-set straight win against Doust in the Men's Singles, the last two being very even. Parker and Doust made no race of it in the Men's Doubles against Swainson brothers, and in the Combined Doubles Miss Powdrell and Parker had no difficulty in winning. Fisher had a close finish with Pearce, of South Canterbury, in the second round of the Singles, and, playing with Miss Ward, he made a good display against Miss Nunnelly and Wilding in the Combined Doubles. The results of the play are : — Men'siSingles.— Prouse beat Weir, 6—7, 6^o, B—6, 4—6, 9—7. Second round : Fisjier beat W .Pearce, 6—3, 6—4, 7—5. Wilding beat Peacock, 6—l, 6—o, 6—o. Third round: Wilding Jbeat Harraway, 6 — l, 6—^o, 6—o. Ladies' Singles. — First round : Miss Wellwood beat Miss N. L. Hughes, 6— 2. 6—l. 'j Men's Doubles. — Second round: ; Quill and Prouse beat Leggatt and Rowley, 6—4, 3—6, 67-2, 6—4, 9—7. Ladies' Doubles.— Misses Wellwood and Travers beat Misses Cock and Batham, 10—8, 4—6/6—l. Misses Twidd and Need beat Misses ' Tur- 1 ton and Hannay, 6—2, 6 — 2. Combined Doubles.— First round: Miss Wellwood and Brown beat Mrs Goldie and Weir, 6—4, 7—5. Second t round: Miss Braithwaite and Peacook beat Miss Batham and V. D Bamford, 6—4, 6-^. Miss Powdrell and Parker beat Miss Hughes and Swainson, 6 — o, 6 — l. . Nelson, December 28.
